AMAZON RECOMMENDATIONS 10:21:16 – MUST-HAVE ITEMS FOR SELF-SUFFICIENT LIFE

Each Monday and Wednesday, I bring you items from Amazon that I personally use or can recommend based on my experience. I consider them critical for modern homesteading, prepping and living more self-sufficiently. Even if you already have one, these items make great presents for your friends and loved ones who aspire to be better prepared.

bron-coucke-guillotine

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE charcuterie! So I have two awesome recommendations for you charcuterie lovers.

The first is this awesome Bron Coucke Sausage & Chorizo Guillotine Slicer. If you’ve ever hand sliced salami or any other dry-cured sausage with a knife, you know what a pain it is to slice evenly. Not to mention how close you have to get your fingers to the blade that slices back and forth as you aim for thin slices.

The beautiful Bron Coucke Sausage & Chorizo Guillotine Slicer solves all that. It gives quick, precise cuts of salami and all dry-cured sausages. The rubber feet on the bottom ensures it won’t slip, so you’ll be able to slice with greater control.

Plus…let’s face it. This thing looks awesome on the counter! It’s inviting you to buy some charcuterie, or, better yet, make your own.

charcuterieAnd that brings up my second recommendation. The book, Charcuterie, by Michael Ruhlman. I’ve had this book for years…it’s where I first learned to make bacon, pepperoni and use every bit of each animal we harvest.

This book is a perennial bestseller and is one that you want in hard copy–not on a Kindle.

Now, go make some salami with the book Charcuterie or the awesome Bron Coucke Sausage & Chorizo Guillotine Slicer!

Amazon Recommendations 10:10:16 – Must-Have Items for Self-Sufficient Life

Each Monday and Wednesday, I bring you items from Amazon that I personally use or can recommend based on my experience. I consider them critical for modern homesteading, prepping and living more self-sufficiently. Even if you already have one, these items make great presents for your friends and loved ones who aspire to be better prepared.

bolt-powerThe Bolt Power Portable 600 Amp Jump Starter Pack is an absolute must have! This thing can almost fit in your back pocket and will start your car or truck battery when it’s flat dead.

For that reason alone it’s a great idea to have one in every car you own (I do), but it does much more.

For instance, see that air compressor it comes with? Yep, 80 PSI air compressor can inflate your car tires if you have an emergency.

And see those ports on the back? That’s for charging your phones or laptops. It even comes with 7-in-1 adapters to fit various brands of laptops.

I really like the Bolt Power Pack because, look, you don’t want to be stranded without power. Whether it’s for your vehicle, phone or computer. That’s what preparedness is all about–having a backup plan.

That’s what the Bolt Power Pack provides, so check it out.

Amazon Recommendations 10:05:16 – Two Must-Have Items for Self-Sufficient Life

Each Monday and Wednesday, I bring you two items from Amazon that I personally use or can recommend based on my experience. I consider them critical for modern homesteading, prepping and living more self-sufficiently. Even if you already have one, these items make great presents for your friends and loved ones who aspire to be better prepared.

Excalibur-2900ECB-9-Tray-Economy-Dehydrator-Black-0The first item is our Excalibur Food Dehydrator. It’s one of our most frequently used appliances.

We used to have one of those round dehydrators–you know the type. But the heater on those is on the bottom, so it dries very unevenly. The bottom trays dry much faster than the top.

With the heater on the rear, the Excalibur dries the contents of all trays evenly so everything’s done at once.

Dehydration concentrates the natural flavor, sweetness, and aromas of your food. Leaving you with a flavor that’s far healthier than high-fat snacks and high-sugar candies that are filled with chemical preservatives.

We use this for dehydrating eggs in the summer, drying herbs, making fruit leathers and so much more.

The Excalibur 9-Tray Large Dehydrator provides 15 square feet of drying space making this the biggest and best there is! This unit includes flexible polyscreen tray inserts to prevent foods from sticking to trays, adjustable thermostat, and a convenient 26 hour timer.

This is a handy item to have around…just check out the 1,200+ reviews on Amazon.

mountain-house-just-in-caseThe second item today is a Mountain House “Just in Case” bucket of freeze-dried food.

It’s a sad fact that the average American home has less than three days of food stored.

With 12 total meals, this single bucket has enough food to feed a person for 3.5 days (Based on USDA recommended diet of 2,000 calories/day). Each Mountain House Just in Case Bucket contains the following Mountain House meals:

● 2 x Beef Stroganoff.

● 2 x Chicken Teriyaki.

● 2 x Beef Stew.

● 2 x Lasagna with Meat Sauce.

● 2 x Noodles and Chicken.

● 2 x Granola with Milk and Blueberries.

Mountain House freeze-dried food is perfect for:

  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Camping
  • Backpacking
  • Hunting
  • Fishing
  • Travel
  • Occasional Everyday Use

Of course, we have many of these buckets, but also store lots of bulk food in our five gallon mylar bags. We fill those with rice, wheat, oats and beans and put them in these five gallon buckets, then seal with these gamma seal lids. That’s how we handle long-term food storage, but we also take the Mountain House freeze dried packets on our camping trips for quick meals and keep some in our vehicles in case we’re ever stuck on the road.

Yeah, I know what you’re thinking—how can we boil water on the side of the road. We keep a Kelly Kettle for that–we can boil water in less than two minutes by using a few twigs.

So there you have it. There are lots of tools you need to live a self-sufficient life, but these are the two I recommend today. If you don’t have them, get them.

Amazon Recommendations 10:03:16 – Two Must-Have Items for Self-Sufficient Life

Each Monday and Wednesday, I bring you two items from Amazon that I personally use or can recommend based on my experience. I consider them critical for modern homesteading, prepping and living more self-sufficiently. Even if you already have one, these items make great presents for your friends and loved ones who aspire to be better prepared.

Mr. HeaterThe first item is the Mr. Heater. It’s an indoor safe portable heater fueled by those small propane canisters.

It cranks out up to 9,000 BTU and heats areas up to 200 square feet. That makes it perfect as a prepping item for power outages, or to heat up your tent or camper. Even your deer stand.

This is a handy item to have around…just check out the reviews on Amazon.

pluckerThe second item today is a 24 finger chicken plucker that works with a standard drill.

Raising chickens is part of living a self-sufficient life. And, whether you raise them for meat or eggs, ultimately they all need to be processed.

None of us can afford those big pluckers for home processing, but this 24 finger chicken plucker makes the job easy. Just insert it into your drill and you’re ready to pluck.

Of course, I scaled the birds first, but I do that using this propane turkey deep fryer. Get the water temperature to about 150 degrees, scald the birds for 30 seconds or so with an up and down motion. Then you can easily pluck using the 24 finger chicken plucker.

So there you have it. There are lots of tools you need to live a self-sufficient life, but these are the two I recommend today. If you don’t have them, get them.
